How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe
Part 5: Getting Creative With Accessories

style & fashion

A quick refresher: some women like to use the 33-piece rule when they’re building a three-month capsule wardrobe, whereas, others prefer to stay in the realm of 25 to 50.

Even though each “capsule” should definitely include clothing staples, accents, shoes and handbags, it’s completely up to you whether you decide to throw additional accessories into the mix as part of the final count.

If you want to be strict with yourself and include them, or try to live by the notion of “less is more,” you’re going to have to get creative.

Struggling? Not to worry - follow our top 5 tips for how to accessorise your capsule wardrobe outfits in a way that will make fellow fashionistas jealous.

1. Pick Out Key Accessories

Firstly, only pick out accessories for your capsule wardrobe that you wear all the time or correspond with your capsule outfit choices.

For example, we’re talking about the black leather waist-belt that you need to lock your high-waisted mom jeans in place or the prescription glasses that you don’t usually take off during the daytime.

Even though it can be challenging, leave the pretty things that don’t coordinate with any of your capsule clothing pieces behind. Trust us, it’s for the best.

2. Limit Your Jewellery Pieces

You should also limit the amount of jewellery that you include in your capsule wardrobe. Why? Well, you’ll avoid overwhelming yourself with decisions when it comes to getting dressed for the day.

Keep the staples, like your trusty watch or authentic gold or silver rings that you inherited, but feel free to discard previous seasonal trends.

Need specifics? We suggest a handful of rings, two or three staple necklaces, one or two bracelets and two or three pairs of snazzy earrings for a good amount of jewellery that you can mix and match until your heart’s content.

3. Utilise Hair Accessories

Created several capsule wardrobes before and fancy mixing up your look? Don’t be afraid to use hair accessories alongside traditional add-ons.

For instance, a floppy fedora hat can be just as functional as it is fashionable for the summertime. Likewise, a sparkly hair-clip can perfectly polish off a show-stopping outfit for the Christmas party season.

Either way, be sure to choose wisely and stick to neutrals or metallics that will go with practically any colour palette.

4. Change Up Your Hairstyles

Similarly, you can use your hair itself to change up your appearance or put a different spin on a capsule wardrobe outfit that you’ve worn numerous times.

From curling your tresses with tongs to pinning them up in a beehive that would make even Brigitte Bardot jealous, rocking a capsule wardrobe is all about getting experimental to keep things fresh and exciting.

5. Play Around With Your Makeup

Finally, are you getting tired of wearing the same clothes, accessories and hairstyles?

Don’t sweat it - you can also push yourself out of your comfort zone by playing around with various makeup aesthetics.

Whether it’s an understated natural look or something that will satisfy your inner maximalist, one thing’s for sure: you’ll never know if you like a particular style of makeup unless you try it!

Finding the Perfect Capsule Wardrobe For You

Ultimately, curating a perfect capsule is all about balance. You have to stick with the pieces that suit you and are considered staples while simultaneously getting innovative with your styling.

Always remember that we all have different bodies and lifestyles so what works as a capsule wardrobe for one person might not work for another - and that’s absolutely fine.

If things are a little chaotic in the beginning until you figure out what works best for you, then so be it. Just have fun trying and that’s all that matters!

This concludes the “How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe” series. We wish you the best of luck in creating a wonderful capsule wardrobe that is sensible yet stylish. Let us know how you get on and tag us in your photos on Instagram @yourstyleyourstory.
